Business Wisdom found in the Movies

Business Wisdom found in the Movies
Movies are part of today’s pop culture.  And while most of us watch for entertainment, we can often find nuggets of wisdom that apply to our lives.  Much like a horoscope, it can be alarming how accurate anecdotes and quotes apply to what is ailing us.  In the business world, this is also true.  Below are three quotes from movies that have inspired, motivated and helped us understand why we keep waking up in the morning to make our small businesses flourish.

  • “There’s no such thing as going too far. You understand? You push everything as far as you can. You push and you push and you push until it starts pushing back. And then you push some more.” Walter Abrams, Two for the Money

It may seem like a challenge to go into work everyday and push yourself to the brink.  Whether that means getting up at 5am and working until 9pm, or sacrificing wants for needs.  Whatever you need to do to make your business work and succeed is what you will be obligated to do.  Eventually, however, it will take a toll on your body and your emotions.  At that point, you’re going to need to take a deep breath, gather yourself and keep on keeping on.  Keep pushing that line until it no longer exists.

  • “Two little mice fell into a bucket of cream.  One mouse quickly gave up and drowned.  The second mouse wouldn’t quit.  He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out.” Frank Abagnale Sr. Catch me if you can

This quote is quite obvious.  Don’t ever give up.  You will never know what you’re capable of if you don’t continue to struggle and overcome challenge.  Much like the second mouse, there will be trials and tribulations you will face, especially if you are just starting your business.  But in the end, if you choose to “keep pushing” and fight through adversity, you will turn that cream into butter.

  • “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains.” “Crash” Davis, Bull Durham

Through stormy skies and turbulent weather (which there often is in small business) you must learn to hunker down and bare the storm.  But don’t forget that with the losses comes the wins – and without the losses, the wins wouldn’t be as amazing.

What are some movie quotes that have inspired you in the business world or otherwise?
