The latest trend in biometric fingerprint and identification technology was recently featured on one of the most popular TV shows. Last week on
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, "A Family Affair", Greg Sanders used
Motorola's Mobile AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) on the MC75 mobile computer with biometric attachment to scan a homicide victim's fingerprint at the crime scene.
Since the victim had no identification on him, the Mobile AFIS allowed Sanders to immediately start searching for his identity without having to go back to the crime lab to process biometric data and then access personal or criminal history. Sanders could have also used the 2MP color camera on the MC75 to capture crime scene photos. This multifunctional device saved the city of Las Vegas man-hours and money-at least on the TV show. But this is a real solution that is being used for a number of different applications in law enforcement, healthcare, social services, and event security.
