The Client

Calvert County Public Schools

Calvert County Public Schools, the 13th largest by student population among 24 school systems in the state, consistently ranks among Maryland’s top districts based on state assessments. The district consists of 12 elementary schools, six middle schools, four high schools, one special education center, and one career and technology academy.

The Challenge

Three years ago, the district launched a 1:1 leased laptop program to lease laptops to their more than 15,900 students. At the time, a process for asset management did not exist within the district.

For one year, the district tracked the check in/check out and assignment of laptops for thousands of students via Excel spreadsheets. The process proved time consuming, difficult, and error prone. The district’s IT department decided it was time for a change.

The Solution

After some internet research, Philip Leclerc, a computer technician for the district, discovered Wasp Barcode Technologies and recommended the district’s transition to a Wasp asset management solution largely due to its ease of use.

The Result

Initially, the district’s goal for the Wasp asset management solution was to simply manage the 1:1 laptops via check in/check out; however, once they discovered how easy the system was to learn and use, the district began using it to track all of their new IT equipment.

For the past two years, the district has utilized the Wasp asset management solution to track 28,977 assets, including laptops, desktop computers, computer monitors, printers, projectors, and more. They currently have 20 users in the system and 32 sites, 24 of which are schools within the district.

Leclerc and his team have enjoyed increased productivity since the implementation of the Wasp asset management solution and all the feedback he’s received from users indicates that the system is very easy to use.

“I have nothing but good experiences with Wasp,” said Leclerc. “Everyone I have worked with has been prompt in their responses. I have had several other asset tracking companies reach out to try their product and, with confidence, I am able to say, ‘No thank you, we are very happy with our current asset tracking solution!’”
