Fishbowl plans and builds. It supports multilevel bills of materials, including sub-assemblies, configurable finished goods, and labor and time costs associated with a build. Barcode scanning captures inventory movements as materials move between receiving, storage, production, and finished goods, while inventory audits and reporting help maintain accurate inventory records across every facility. Wasp Inventory Complete integrates with ERP, accounting, and MES systems, providing the inventory visibility and barcode-driven data collection those systems often lack. What Wasp Inventory doesn’t do is BOM-driven manufacturing planning. 2. Traceability, Lot Tracking, and Recalls

The practical difference is scope. Fishbowl’s traceability is closely tied to manufacturing builds and work orders. It also maintains a complete transaction history and supports on-premise deployment for operations whose compliance requirements rule out cloud-only software.

It’s worth being concrete about what “traceability” means operationally, because it’s a word every vendor uses. The question isn’t whether the system stores a lot number. The two products begin to diverge as operations expand beyond manufacturing plants into large distribution networks, service operations, customer locations, and other multi-site environments. Fishbowl’s orientation is production operations rather than many-site distribution, service parts, or customer-held stock.

Verdict: Wasp wins for organizations managing inventory across multiple sites, warehouses, customer locations, or field operations, especially when they need centralized inventory visibility, barcode-driven inventory management, and the flexibility to grow without adding subscription tiers. Fishbowl is a strong fit for manufacturers coordinating inventory across a smaller number of production facilities.

4. Reporting, Audit Trails, and Transaction History

Inventory software is only worth what you can pull out of it. If you can’t answer a question quickly, the software isn’t delivering much value.

Wasp Inventory includes more than 70 standard reports, a custom report builder, and scheduled report delivery, allowing recurring inventory reports to be distributed automatically once configured. Real-time notifications can also alert users in the application or by email when triggered events occur, such as an item falling below its minimum stock level or an order becoming past due. Underneath that sits a complete transaction history: every receipt, transfer, adjustment, pick, and other inventory movements timestamped and attributed to a user.

Fishbowl offers strong standard reporting for manufacturing operations, but users looking for greater reporting flexibility may find Wasp the better fit.

5. Mobile, Offline, and Shop-Floor Reality

Plant floors, stockrooms, and remote sites are the places where connectivity assumptions go to die. Wi-Fi drops behind a metal rack, a clinic is an hour from the nearest tower, and the count still has to happen.

Wasp Inventory runs on iOS and Android devices for teams that want to use phones and tablets, and on rugged mobile computers for environments where consumer devices aren’t practical. Mobile users can receive inventory, pick orders, transfer stock, perform inventory audits, and capture barcode-driven transactions where the work happens, even when connectivity is limited. For operations that require purpose-built hardware, Wasp also offers rugged scanners and mobile computers that are pre-tested to work with the software. 

The Maniilaq Association deployment is the clearest illustration of why offline capability matters. The organization operates a hospital and 11 remote clinics in northwest Alaska, where internet connectivity is unreliable by default. Before Wasp, staff spent hours manually transferring scanner data. The system eliminated a process that had consumed 390 hours a year, roughly 10 working weeks recovered from data entry.

Lovin’ Spoonfuls, a Boston food rescue organization, runs the same problem on wheels. Six refrigerated trucks move perishable inventory to more than 140 nonprofit partners, generating over 500 transactions a day, much of it in places where a signal isn’t guaranteed. 6. Hardware: One Vendor or Two

Both products scan barcodes, and both work with third-party devices. Only one of them offers the hardware.

Wasp provides barcode scanners, rugged mobile computers, and barcode printers. Wasp hardware is pre-tested against the software for compatibility. “Pre-tested” matters here. It means the scanner, firmware, printer driver, and label templates have been validated to work together before they reach your operation. That reduces compatibility issues that can slow down implementation or disrupt day-to-day scanning. Wasp also supports a wide range of third-party barcode devices, and you can scan from Android and iOS phones, so nobody is forced into a hardware purchase. Durability is part of the same decision. A stockroom label and a label that lives on a part moving through a wash station, a freezer, or a paint booth are different products, and choosing the wrong one often doesn’t become obvious until months later as unreadable barcodes and manual workarounds. Fishbowl doesn’t make hardware. Its own site says it offers “great hardware recommendations” and points customers toward devices from other providers, organized into mobile scanner kits, printer bundles, and pocket scanners from established manufacturers.

That approach has a legitimate case behind it, and it’s worth stating plainly. A vendor-neutral stance means you can choose best-of-breed devices independent of your software decision, and if your organization has already standardized on a particular scanner platform or has an existing hardware supplier and warranty program, Fishbowl slots into that without asking you to change it. Some IT departments prefer exactly that separation.

The tradeoff is that it means a separate vendor relationship, a separate procurement cycle, and a separate support number.

The difference shows up on a bad day rather than a good one. When a printer stops talking to the platform mid-shift, a single-vendor operation makes one phone call. In a two-vendor environment, troubleshooting may involve both the software provider and the hardware vendor, which can add time to resolving the issue. 7. QuickBooks, ERP, and Integrations

QuickBooks is Fishbowl’s signature strength and the reason many buyers shortlist it. It offers two-way sync with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Canada, and Xero, covering purchase orders, sales orders, bills, invoices, inventory adjustments, and general ledger entries. It also publishes a documented developer API with its own testing tooling, which matters if you have an internal developer or a partner building custom connections. Few products in this category have invested as long or as deliberately in the QuickBooks relationship, and if Desktop is the hub your business runs on, that depth is hard to match and should weigh heavily in your decision.

The caveat that shows up in reviews is reliability rather than coverage. Users report reconciliation work coming back from the sync, including one who described the QuickBooks Online integration producing “doubled up payments and a lot of reconciling on the accounting side.” That’s one reviewer’s experience rather than a universal outcome, but sync friction is a recurring theme worth asking hard questions about in a demo, because a broad integration is only as good as its reliability day-to-day and at month-end close.

Wasp Inventory Complete offers native QuickBooks Online and NetSuite integration, along with a REST API, ShipStation, and eCommerce integrations, with additional licensing required. It doesn’t go as deep on QuickBooks Desktop as Fishbowl does. Where Wasp differentiates is  inventory execution. It works alongside ERP, accounting, and MES systems to capture barcode-driven inventory transactions that those systems often aren’t designed to record directly.

That distinction is worth sitting with, because it describes a common situation. Plenty of mid-market manufacturers already own an ERP. It handles orders, financials, and planning perfectly well, and nobody is replacing it. What it doesn’t do is know that a pallet moved from receiving to line three at 6:40 this morning, or that the lot consumed in that build came from a September delivery. Many ERP systems aren’t designed to capture day-to-day inventory movement directly on the warehouse floor because that requires barcode scanning, mobile devices, and disciplined transaction capture. Wasp is often bought to sit underneath an existing system and feed it accurate movement data, rather than to become the system of record for the whole business.

8. Deployment: Cloud and On-Premise

Both vendors can put software in the cloud or on your own servers, but they get there differently.

Wasp Inventory is available as both a cloud and on-premise deployment, allowing organizations to choose the environment that best fits their requirements. Wasp Inventory – Cloud and Wasp Inventory – On Premise are deployment choices within one product line, and there’s a migration path if you start on-premise and later move to cloud. You pick what fits your environment without picking a different product.

Fishbowl splits it. The cloud Fishbowl Inventory line is true cloud, while the heavier Fishbowl Manufacturing line runs on-premise or through partner hosting. So your deployment requirement can steer which Fishbowl product you buy, and therefore which features you get. In fairness, the partner-hosting route has its advantages: a specialist partner manages the environment, patching, and backups, which suits teams that want on-premise-grade control without staffing it internally.

This is a hard requirement for a meaningful slice of manufacturers, and it’s usually not the buyer’s call. Defense and aerospace suppliers working under ITAR controls, plants with tight network segmentation between the business network and the production floor, and organizations operating under compliance mandates that restrict where data can live don’t get to treat deployment as a preference. If your security review eliminates SaaS, the evaluation narrows before features are even discussed.

The reverse case matters too. Plenty of manufacturers start on-premise because that’s what the current policy requires, then move to cloud two or three years later when the policy changes or the server refresh comes due. Being able to make that move without changing products, retraining staff, or re-implementing is worth more than it appears during a first evaluation.

Verdict: Wasp wins on deployment flexibility and simplicity. Organizations can choose cloud or on-premise without changing products or giving up functionality. Fishbowl also supports both deployment models, but the deployment choice can influence which Fishbowl product best fits the organization.

9. Pricing and Implementation: What You Actually Pay

Fishbowl publishes its cloud pricing, and that deserves credit. A great many vendors in this category, Wasp included, quote rather than publish, so a buyer can size Fishbowl before ever speaking to a salesperson. Fishbowl Inventory runs $229 a month for two users, $429 a month for five users, and $729 a month for 10 users, each billed annually. The heavier lines are quote-only: Fishbowl Manufacturing starts at $675 a month and Advanced Warehouse at $595 a month, priced by users and deployment.

The line item that surprises buyers sits below the plan price. Fishbowl requires a paid implementation package on every purchase. Its own pricing page describes a dedicated implementation specialist, data migration, a six-to-eight week training certification program, and dedicated go-live support. Third-party estimates put that package at roughly $2,000 to $10,000 or more on top of the subscription.

Two details deserve attention. The first is that the data migration explicitly excludes historical data, which for a manufacturer with years of lot and serial history is a meaningful gap to plan around. The second is the six-to-eight week certification timeline, which means implementation and certification need to be factored into the project schedule.

None of that makes the requirement unreasonable. Inventory implementations fail regularly, usually because nobody was trained and the data was never cleaned, and a vendor that insists on structured onboarding is addressing a real failure mode. If your team has never run barcode inventory before, a mandatory certification program may be worth exactly what it costs. The point is to price and schedule it deliberately rather than discover it during procurement.

Wasp Inventory uses per-user licensing and doesn’t limit inventory records, sites, or transaction volume by subscription tier, so growth doesn’t trigger a plan migration. Wasp also strongly recommends implementation services to help customers configure the system, prepare their data, and get users up and running. Implementation services are typically included as a line item on a Wasp Inventory quote, with the scope and cost based on the customer’s needs. Unlike Fishbowl, Wasp does not require every customer to purchase a prescribed implementation package or complete a mandatory certification program.

The difference compounds with scale, and it’s worth doing the math before you sign. Fishbowl’s published pricing stops at 10 users. Everything above that moves into quote-only territory priced by user count and deployment. An operation like Al Rugaib Furniture, running 160 users across 95 sites against 33,267 items and more than eight million transactions a year, sits far outside any published tier. Under a model where cost scales with seats, sites, and volume simultaneously, a deployment at that size becomes a very different financial conversation than the $229 entry price suggests.
